Make Poverty History

Every minute counts Right now, one in every six people around the world lives on less than $1 a day. It doesn’t have to be this way. Make Poverty History is the largest anti-poverty movement in history and a global call to action to end the injustice of poverty. Make Poverty History is also concerned that climate change is affecting poor people in developing countries first and worst, and that without action to stop dangerous climate change we will not achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In Australia, Make Poverty History is a coalition of more than 60 aid agencies, community groups and religious organisations, including Oxfam Australia. The coalition is calling on all political parties to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by:

  • Increasing Australia’s aid and ensuring it is used effectively
  • Tackling climate change to make a safe climate for all
  • Eliminating hunger – ensuring there is food for all

This would be achieved by:

  • Increasing Australia’s overseas development assistance to 0.7% of gross national income
  • Focusing the Australian aid effort on achieving the MDGs
  • Cutting greenhouse emissions in developed countries by 40% by 2020
  • Providing our fair share of the US$150 billion for climate adaptation and mitigation needed globally by 2020. (This needs to be additional to overseas development assistance.)
  • Providing support and assistance to small-scale farmers in developing countries
  • Removing unfair subsidies and trade barriers in developed countries which negatively impact on farmers in developing countries

Make Poverty History needs your voice. Join the millions of people in Australia and around the world who are taking action to Make Poverty History.

Right now, children are starving to death in South Sudan. Please give an urgent gift today to halt this famine before it kills even more children.

Take the Act for Peace Ration Challenge and eat the same rations as a Syrian refugee during Refugee Week (June 2017). Raise money to support refugees who have lost everything, and challenge perspectives – including your own.

Right now, thousands of innocent people are fleeing Syria every day to protect their families from bloodshed, violence and death. We need your support to provide emergency relief packs to the families fleeing in Syria.
