The Vanuatu Minister of Agriculture has released a statement urgently calling for international assistance in the wake of the Category 5 Cyclone on March 14th. “Our Agricultural experts estimate that Vanuatu’s people will run out of food in less than one week from today, “ said the Honorable David Tosul. Act for Peace, the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia, and its local partner in Vanuatu are responding to the humanitarian crisis and providing urgent relief to the community. Act for Peace’s Disaster Risk Resilience Manager, Geoff Robinson, is in Port Vila and available for interview on the impact of the food shortages and the urgent needs of the population.
Tropical Cyclone Pam, a category 5 cyclone, has devastated Vanuatu, tearing a path of destruction through the island nation. Damage is widespread and the death toll has continued to rise as news of the impact slowly reaches Vila from the worst affected outer islands.
