Vanuatu is comprised of over 80 islands, 65 of which are inhabited. The country was jointly governed by France and Britain beginning in 1906, until its independence in 1980, when it adopted a parliamentary democracy. In the following years, there were some political disputes, including an attempted coup and multiple requests for new elections, which resulted in a more decentralised government.
