Act for Peace in Afghanistan
For three decades, Act for Peace’s partner Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan (CWS P/A) has worked to improve the health of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and, since 1997, returnees in Afghanistan.
Dedicated to advancing Afghan women’s health over the decades, CWS P/A has helped to reduce controllable diseases such as tuberculosis, and also brought primary and secondary health services into the community. CWS P/A continues to implement disaster management and capacity building programs with the aim of improving the health and educational status of women and children through preventive, curative and reproductive health care as well as outreach and health education in eastern and southern Afghanistan.
Act for Peace is working with our project partner, the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), in helping local demining organisations in Afghanistan remove the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnances. Their approach includes trained dogs, manual and mechanical demining. Over the last six years, a total area of 180 million m2 throughout Afghanistan has been cleared of mines thanks to the work of demining organisations.
Act for Peace’s project partners have worked towards overcoming the drought and food shortages in Afghanistan, by providing over 500 Afghans with opportunities for income generation and over 1000 farmers with increased access to irrigation for their crops and livestock. This work has increased the personal incomes of 1,500 Afghans, and increased food security due to larger crop yields.
In addition, health and hygiene training has been provided to 150 women who are heads of households in order to increase the health of their families. Emergency relief has been provided to individuals who have been affected by the drought in the form of food aid and supplies, including shelter for 150 families.
