Act for Peace Response
Act for Peace is accepting gifts to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal and once immediate needs are addressed we will focus on the long term rehabilitation of the affected populations. The scale of the damage is immense and we must make a long-term commitment to our partners to ensure they can rebuild.
Background
The quake's epicentre was only 10 miles (16 km) from Port-au-Prince, where some 1 million people live, many of them in sprawling shanty towns and extreme poverty. Around 10 million people live in Haiti and it is considered the most impoverished country in the Western Hemishpere.
There is widespread destruction to homes, schools and other buildings, and major damage to water, electricity and road systems. Search and rescue, medical attention, shelter, food, water and sanitation are the immediate priorities in the aftermath of the disaster.
Our partners are sourcing emergency relief items for distribution to more than 15,000 people in eight communities. We are targeting areas that are getting little help from other agencies. Our partners are providing water and sanitation materials, hygiene kits, shelter, blankets, jerry cans, food packages and psychosocial treatment for the victims of this tragedy.
