Columbia has been beset by a number of political problems, including dictatorships, drug cartels with political power and guerrilla insurgencies. It has been only recently that the elected government has been willing to crack down on these problems with the help of the military and an increased use of force. Some people in the international community have suggested that the government is violating human rights in order to achieve peace, but the majority of people see this decrease in violence as beneficial in terms of economic and social change within the country.
