Act for Peace in Zambia

One of the largest concerns in Zambia at the present time is that of education. While free schooling is supplied to citizens through their seventh year, there is a fee for any higher level of education. For this reason, the majority of children drop out when they complete their seventh year, at the age of only 12 or 13. This lack of education makes it difficult for Zambians to find work in any occupation other than subsistence farming, placing many underneath the poverty line and leading to a lack of income, which promotes an increase in risky behaviour without proper healthcare.

In Zambia, the risk for disease is high and over 15% of the population is estimated to be infected by HIV/AIDS. The high population growth and increasing medical costs due to HIV/AIDS cannot be supported by the level of economic growth in the country, creating a difficult situation for a government trying to provide basic services to its citizens.

The 2008-09 rainy season in Zambia created more problems for the citizens. There was extensive flooding in the country and over 20,000 households were directly affected. These people do not have the means to rebuild their houses or succeed without the crops that were destroyed by flooding. The lack of food will result in more expensive prices and difficulty for the entire population in the coming year.

Act for Peace’s project partners support the Zambians affected by flooding. Due to the economic hardship, the government cannot provide the necessary food aid to all people who were affected by the disaster. Project partners are supplementing government aid with food assistance to over 87,000 people. This will occur through the purchase of as much local food as possible to support local markets and will also include education about farming techniques that will help increase food stability in the coming years.

Can provide 25 kg of mealie meal or a one month supply of food to an individual in need.
