Act for Peace has been working with project partners in many areas of ongoing conflict for over 60 years. During this time, significant progress has been made in some areas in curtailing a long history of ingrained conflict. In other areas, there has been a decline in peaceful processes due to long-term instability.

More than 740,000 people die each year as a result of the violence associated with armed conflicts. Armed violence is spread across age groups but affects certain groups and regions disproportionately. It is the fourth leading cause of death for persons between the ages of 15 and 44 worldwide. In Africa, armed violence is ninth leading cause of death.

Armed violence imposes huge human, social, and economic costs on states and societies. Armed violence also corrodes the social fabric of communities, sows fear and insecurity, destroys human and social capital, and undermines development investments and aid effectiveness.  Act for Peace works with project partners to initiate peace-building and disarmament programs in many of these regions.
