Emergency update

The world was moved by the recent devastating events in Vaunatu and Nepal. But through your generosity, you are bringing comfort and hope to the survivors of those terrible disasters. Thank you.

Your generous gifts have been providing urgently needed food, water, blankets, clothes, medical supplies and shelter to the victims of the recent earthquake in Nepal.

The 7.8 magnitude quake affected more than 8 million people across the country when it hit on May 12th. More than 8,000 people were killed, tens of thousands injured and nearly a million homes, schools and other buildings were destroyed. You responded fast, together with other members of the global ACT Alliance, to provide emergency relief to those worst affected.

Your gifts in action

Shelter: Over 50,000 people provided with either emergency or permanent shelter in the worst affected districts.

Food: Food packages distributed to 20,000 people immediately after the earthquake.

Water: Water filter systems and hygiene kits distributed to over 40,000 people, helping protect them from diseases like cholera which can spread rapidly in disaster situations.

Health: Temporary health centres set up in 15 target districts to respond to immediate medical needs. Psychosocial support given to 20,000 people to help them come to terms with the disaster and cope with the loss of loved ones.

Education: 70 temporary learning centres constructed to keep classes open and ensure children can continue their education.

Protection: 9 safe spaces for women and girls set up across several target districts.

More ways to take action

Help keep families at risk from landslides safe by providing training in disaster risk reduction in schools. Training helps children to identify risks and warning signs of landslides, and teaches them how to keep safe if one happens.

Take the Act for Peace Ration Challenge and eat the same rations as a Syrian refugee during Refugee Week (19-26 June 2016). Raise money to support refugees who have lost everything, and challenge perspectives – including your own.

Right now, thousands of innocent people are fleeing Syria every day to protect their families from bloodshed, violence and death. We need your support to provide emergency relief packs to the families fleeing in Syria.
