Haiti Earthquake Appeal

In January 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, causing unprecedented destruction and catastrophic loss of life. Act for Peace responded immediately through project partner Church World Service, providing relief assistance including food, shelter, water and sanitation, psychosocial support, health care and awareness, education and livelihood programs.

Act for Peace responded with emergency support after a catastrophic earthquake crippled Haiti in January 2010. The quake's epicentre was only 16 kilometres from Port-au-Prince, where some one million people live, many of them in sprawling shanty towns and extreme poverty. Around 10 million people live in Haiti, and it is considered the most impoverished country in the western hemisphere.

The quake caused widespread destruction to homes, schools and other buildings, and major damage to water, electricity and road systems. Search and rescue, medical attention, shelter, food, water and sanitation were the immediate priorities in the aftermath of the disaster. Our partners sourced emergency relief items for distribution to more than 15,000 people in eight communities, targeting areas that received little help from other agencies. They provided water and sanitation materials, hygiene kits, shelter, blankets, jerry cans,  food packages and psychosocial treatment for the victims of this tragedy.
