International Day of Peace

September 21, 2011

What is the International Day of Peace?

The International Day of Peace, created by the United Nations in 1981, is celebrated on September 21 every year. On this day, individuals and nations across the world are encouraged to engage in practical acts of peace to promote the broader goal of conflict resolution.

“Peace day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” - United Nations General Assembly, 1981

Ask the Australian Government to Invest in Peace

Take action now: write to the Foreign Minister, the Hon. Kevin Rudd, encouraging the Australian government to invest in peace.

1.5 billion people live in areas affected by fragility, conflict or large-scale organised armed violence, and 43 million people are currently displaced by conflict, persecution and armed violence, the highest number in more than 15 years. Act for Peace believes that only delivering humanitarian aid in conflict situations is not sufficient. By investing in conflict prevention and resolution, peace and security sector programs, together we can help break the cycle of conflict and poverty. Take action now!

International Day of Prayer for Peace

Each year on September 21, churches and parishes are invited to observe the International Day of Prayer for Peace. September 21 is also the United Nations-sponsored International Day of Peace. The International Day of Prayer for Peace offers an opportunity for church communities in all places to pray and act together to nurture lasting peace in the hearts of people, their families, communities and societies. The Day of Prayer is one of the initiatives of the World Council of Churches’ Decade to Overcome Violence.
