  • End mandatory detention!

I call on the Australian Parliament to end the policy of mandatory detention of asylum seekers and to work cooperatively on developing a regional framework to protect people fleeing persecution.

    This includes:

    - adopting a more flexible community release and support model to replace mandatory detention

    -  in exceptional cases where detention is seen as necessary there be an independent, judicial review after three months, with power to end the detention
    - ensuring that no children are held in detention
    - ensuring all so-called "irregular or unauthorised arrivals" have equal access to and protection under Australian law
    - supporting countries in our region to offer more effective protection to asylum seekers and refugees
    - ending the unhelpful and misleading political rhetoric surrounding asylum seekers and refugees and putting protection needs above divisive politics
