About Us
About Act for Peace
Act for Peace is the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia.
We empower communities to act for peace in conflict-affected areas by working with long-term project partners in helping communities to provide protection, prevent further conflict, manage disasters and reduce poverty. Our partners are assisting more than 500,000 refugees and more than 1 million people living in extreme poverty.
We also work across Australia by encouraging support for our partners throughout the year, when conflicts break out and particularly at Christmas time through our largest church driven appeal, the Christmas Bowl.
Act for Peace is a member of the global Action by Churches Together (ACT) alliance, which helps communities affected by poverty or conflict in more than 125 countries. We respond to all conflicts and work long-term in many of the world’s most protracted conflicts. For example, we have worked with partners for over 20 years in Sudan, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Burma, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Indonesia. We also work with partners in the Pacific and with Indigenous and refugee communities in Australia.
In building the foundations for real and lasting peace in the places where we work, it is vital to:
reduce poverty through growing community food, health and education programs |
protect refugees and displaced people by helping communities to manage safe refugee camps |
prevent conflicts through facilitating community-driven peace, reconciliation and disarmament processes |
empower communities by helping them to lead this work and all aspects of their own development |
We began our operations in 1948 helping refugees displaced during World War II. In 1949, we started our best known appeal, the Christmas Bowl, which has collected over $100 million for this work and reminds us that Christmas should be a time of peace for all. To help ensure that it is, please act for peace now.
